On 6th June 2023, Ambassador, Assistant Minister and Director General for Global Issues from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan, Mr. Takeshi AKAHORI paid a courtesy call to His Excellency, Ambassador Kwacha Chisiza at the embassy’s office.

Among other things, Mr. Takaneshi AKAHORI thanked His Excellency Ambassador Kwacha Chisiza for granting his request and sent his condolences to the victims of Cyclone Freddy in Malawi, saying that it is only natural for people to come together in times of need. He also mentioned that the Japanese government had increased its financial support for the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction, which is a component of the global emergency response system.

In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Director General for Global Issues, Mr. AKAHORI vowed his commitment to tackling global concerns like global food security, global health, and climate change.

In light of rivalry within the Asia-Pacific Group, the Assistant Minister kindly reminded ambassador Kwacha Chisiza of Malawi’s support for his ECOSOC candidacy which Japanese government has announced its candidacy for the upcoming 2024–2026 term of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In his response, Ambassador Kwacha Chisiza lauded Japan for its readiness, promptness, and teamwork in the face of national disasters and emphasized his desire for additional support. Further, he assured the assistant minister that Malawi would support his candidacy.

ECOSOC brings people and issues together to promote collective action for a sustainable world.
